Whatever genetic and/or environmental factors may lead to autism, one thing is clear: it is the development of the brain that is ultimately impacted. We need to understand the processes involved.

The visual cortex and autistic individuals

Why do visual aids, symbols or a whiteboard incorporated into an interview or workplace help autistic individuals to process information more easily? According to mounting research, many autistic individuals process information via their Visual Cortex at the back of the brain as opposed to the Prefrontal Cortex at the front, which is typically  responsible for information processing and executive function. So use of visual aids is often very useful to support autistic individuals to process information. It is important to remember that the autistic brains, as with a neurotypicals, is constantly growing and changing (neuroplasticity). Image is an artist's interpretation and not to be deemed a scientific diagram.
